Cyber cover for the day systems fail.

Cyber insurance combines cover for your own losses after an incident with cover for claims from other people affected by it. Underwriters now look closely at the controls you have in place.

What it covers

  • First-party costs: forensics, legal advice, notification and credit monitoring
  • Ransomware negotiation and extortion payments where law permits
  • Business interruption and extra expense after a covered event
  • Third-party liability for privacy and network security claims and regulatory defense

What it does not cover

  • Improvements to your systems after a breach, beyond what the policy allows
  • Loss of future business or reputational harm that is not measurable income
  • Physical damage and bodily injury, which other policies address

Fit

Who needs it.

Any company that stores customer data, takes payments online or depends on connected systems to operate. Contracts with larger customers often require it. Technology firms and manufacturers with networked plants have the highest need.

Questions

Straight answers.

What is first-party versus third-party cyber cover?

First-party pays for your own costs and losses after an incident. Third-party pays for claims and regulatory actions brought against you by people whose data or systems were affected.

What controls do underwriters expect?

Multi-factor authentication on email and remote access, tested backups, endpoint detection and a written incident response plan are the usual baseline. Missing controls can mean higher price or declined cover.

Does cyber cover a fraudulent wire transfer?

Sometimes. Social engineering and funds-transfer fraud cover is often a sub-limit or a separate endorsement, and may require call-back verification. We check how it is written.
